Women’s breasts, on average, weight between 5 to 15 pounds, although some women struggle with 20-plus pound breasts. With a “high support sports bra,” the breasts are held up from the bottom, but this doesn’t reduce breast movement during medium-impact or high-impact activities. According to the University of Portsmouth in England, breasts don’t just move up and down, but also from side to side as well as in and out. The structure of the female breast compounds the problem. How to Buy a Sports Bra
What should you look for when you shop for a sports bra? If you engage in medium- to high-impact activities like running, jogging, CrossFit, jumping or ball sports, you should buy a women’s high-impact sports bra that can reduce breast movement. However, other considerations come into play for overall comfort and performance. SugarShock® makes buying the right sports bra easy. Here are some guidelines:
The sports bra must fit properly. Sports bras that are either too loose or too tight can cause chafing and blistering. For SugarShock, we base our sizes on standard U.S. sizes — XS (30), S (32), M (34), and L (36). However, there’s a bit of added length in the front panel to create more surface area, for greater coverage and a better fit.
The rib cage band should fit snugly around your body. If it’s too tight, you won’t breathe well, and if it’s too loose, it will ride up and chafe your skin. During high-impact activity, the rib cage band should stay firmly in place, even if you’re sweaty. The rib cage band of the SugarShock sports bra is wide and snug, yet comfy.
The shoulder straps should be comfortable, but “adjustable straps” can cause problems. You want shoulder straps that won’t slip off but also won’t dig into your skin. Shoulder straps that are loose or overly flexible will stretch even more due to the weight of your breasts. This may cause even greater bounce. Avoid adjustable straps, as the hardware can cause rubbing and friction, which may lead to blisters. SugarShock’s shoulder straps are designed to be smooth for optimal comfort.
The fabric should be durable, breathable and moisture wicking. The most effective women’s high-impact sports bra is made with comfortable fabric that’s durable, breathable and moisture wicking. Some lower-cost sports bras use a coarser fabric blend that can cause discomfort and perhaps even nipple burn. A material that is durable, breathable and moisture wicking is what you should always look for. The Story Behind SugarShock
SugarShock® was invented and engineered by a female athlete for fellow female athletes who were in search of the perfect women’s high-impact sports bra. Trish Hawkins, the founder of SugarSports, LLC and inventor of SugarShock sports bras, is a 34DD triathlon athlete, and she was never able to find a sports bra that worked. So, she decided to engineer and build her own.
Through much trial and error and all the usual mistakes — modifying shoulder straps, adding greater compression, adding cups, tightening the rib cage band — she confirmed that none of these efforts made any difference. She tested her designs on herself, studied anatomical drawings and medical diagrams, and learned how the female body and breast tissue is made. While engaged in this research, she was working at a steel-structure engineering company. She wondered how this problem would be solved in a manufactured environment. It was then that she had the bold idea of adding a shock band to the original sports bra design. She went for a run to test it — and it worked! She had discovered the difference between the high-support sports bras that were on the market and one that was able to absorb and redistribute breast weight.
Trish had the first SugarShock sports bra built for herself, choosing the best fabrics that were soft and smooth, creating her own custom “dream bra.” Women started hearing about her newly designed sports bra and wanted to try it.
